Design and Technology

At St Peter's, we believe that Design and Technology opportunities help children to become problem solvers through practical tasks, developing creativity and imagination.

We plan and deliver thinking, doing and discovering activities that can be applied to real life situations.

Our Design and Technology curriculum provides pupils with knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes that enable them to engage in a broad range of creative activities in response to identifying needs and problems.

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to:

  • Develop skills and confidence appropriate to manipulating a wide range of materials, tools and the economic management of resources.

  • Involve pupils in the act of utilising a wide range of balanced, broad learning contexts, problems or starting points, materials and production processes.

  • Extend pupils’ technological literacy to enable them to become informed designers, makers and questioners of technology.

  • Encourage pupils to work independently and experience a sense of achievement and improvement of self confidence through enjoyable participation of activities.

  • Encourage pupils to be active participants in their own learning, negotiating with adults and peers in the solving of human need using the design and making process.

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
