PSHE and Relationships Education

At St Peter’s, we understand the importance of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) in enabling children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society, based on British values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural learning.  

The aims of PSHE are to enable children to:

• know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle;

• be aware of safety issues;

• understand what makes for good relationships with others;

• have respect for others;

• be independent and responsible members of the school community;

• be positive and active members of a democratic society;

• develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues;

• develop good relationships with other members of the school and the wider community. 

We follow the Jigsaw primary scheme of work, designed in-line with the National Curriculum objectives, which provides a whole school approach to teaching PSHE. 

At St Peter's, we also employ Little Creatives facilitators who deliver their unique Emotional Health program ROAR which provides our pupils with a safe, supportive space to explore areas of the PSHE curriculum.

Our provision includes: 

1. PSHE opportunities across the curriculum, for example; links with statutory curriculum subjects such as science, religious education, physical education, drama, geography, history, group/class discussions, speaking and listening activities and themed assemblies.

2. PSHE opportunities through extra-curricular activities, for example; opportunities for recreational and creative learning time, citizenship projects, health weeks, environmental projects, sponsored fund raising for targeted charities, school council, visits and visitors, education-business initiative, and extended schools’ programme.

3. PSHE opportunities through self-reflection, for example; self-assessment tasks, setting targets, monitoring and celebrating achievements (such as class-based reward schemes or achievement assemblies).

4. The ethos of the school and its partnership approach to the promotion of personal and social development of children across all Key Stages

We recognise that the PSHE curriculum cannot be implemented effectively without the support of parents/carers therefore parents/carers are informed about any upcoming teaching on aspects of PSHE, such as the teaching programme for Sex and Relationship education.
